Here’s a few quick first impressions.

GPS: Actually, we're not talking actual GPS here; instead, this update to the iPhone's Maps app triangulates your position according to your distance from the nearest cell phone towers. You activate the feature by tapping a little bulls-eye in the left-hand corner of the Maps interface; 10 to 30 seconds later, a blue circle appears on the map showing your approximate location—and "approximate" is the key word. In my first few tries, the circle encompassed almost a third of Manhattan—a pretty massive swath of land, and not terribly helpful for, say, finding the nearest ATM. A couple of tries later, however, Maps found my location within a block; not bad at all.

Customizing the home page: Used to be you had to hack your iPhone to tweak the icons on the home page. Now you just touch and hold an icon, and all the icons begin to wiggle; next, just drag the icon wherever you want it to go, even on a subsequent home page (you get a total of nine). Also nice: you can turn Web pages in the mobile Safari into icons on the home page. (Apple calls them Webclips, but they don't work like the real-time, updating Webclips widgets in Mac OS X Leopard.) The wiggling, moveable icons will come in especially handy once third-party iPhone apps become widely available.

Chapters, subtitles, and languages: I was only able to test chapter support for videos (I don't have any iTunes movies with subtitles or alternate languages yet), and it worked nicely; you just tap an icon to the right of the playback controls, and the video image flips around, revealing chapter titles, thumbnails and time elapsed.

Lyrics: Not as impressive as the other new features, if you ask me. Basically, if you have a song in your iPhone tagged with song lyrics (select a song in iTunes, click Command-I, and click the Lyrics tab to add lyrics) field, you just tap the cover art while the song is playing to see the words. Unfortunately, the lyrics display on the iPhone seems to do away with line breaks, which makes a mess of nicely formatted choruses and the link. Pretty disappointing.

SMS messages for multiple recipients: One of the most puzzling omissions on the iPhone has finally been fixed; at last, you can send text messages to multiple recipients at once. Of course, the only drawback is that if you get into a back-and-forth with one recipient, everyone in the group will get your replies, which could get a little confusing. Still, a welcome improvement.

Note: Like each of the previous software updates for the iPhone, this latest patch will wreak havoc with hacked handsets; expect any unauthorized applications (including iPhone unlocking apps) to be wiped clean by the update.

New iPod Upscale Video to HD

A couple of upcoming iPod docks come with the standard "video out" feature, but with a twist—they'll upscale your images to 720p or 1080i. Pretty nice, but don't expect a full-on HD image, and brace yourself for the respective price tags.

Straight out of Macworld comes the DLO HomeDock HD, a sleek iPod dock with an HDMI output (along with composite and S-Video connections), an RF remote, and the ability to upscale standard-def iPod video to 720p or 1080i. Now, let's make something clear from the get-go: like upscaling DVD players, an upscaling iPod dock won't magically turn your iPod video into crystal-clear HD. Instead, upscaling devices interpolate 480p signals to take better advantage of 720p- and 1080i-capable displays. The results vary, of course; in the case of the DLO HomeDock HD, CrunchGear blogger Matt Hickey was impressed enough with the demo to call the HomeDock one of the cooler offerings at Macworld.

Another new contender: the Creative Xdock HD, which not only handles HD upscaling duties but also juices the audio as well, using a technology Creative calls "X-Fi Crystalizer" and CMSS-3D (enough initials for you?) to turn stereo sound from the iPod into full DTS surround sound (akin to receivers that convert stereo tracks to Dolby Digital Pro Logic II surround). Even better, the Xdock HD (which debuted last week at CES) can wirelessly transmit audio to the bundled X-Fi receiver.

Good stuff, but neither of these high-end docks come cheap: the DLO HomeDock HD will retail for $249 when it hits stores this spring, while the Xdock HD (also due this spring) will sell $399.

40 hour laptop batteries

Imagine running your laptop nonstop from New York to Tokyo -- crunch some numbers, work on a memo pop in a few DVDs -- and then do a full day of meetings, using your machine throughout the day and into the night. Imagine doing all this without ever plugging in your computer to recharge its battery.

This scenario may become reality in the near future, if Stanford University scientists succeed in commercializing a breakthrough in the laboratory. Assistant Professor Yi Cui and associates at Stanford's Department of Materials Science and Engineering said they have developed a method to increase the life of rechargeable lithium ion batteries to a whopping 40 hours.

Publishing in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, the Stanford researchers have shown that by using silicon nanowires as the battery anode instead of today's graphite, the amount of lithium the anode can hold is extended tenfold.

Revolution in Battery Design

"It's not a small improvement," Cui said. "It's a revolutionary development." And Cui means to move the development out of the lab as soon as possible. "We are working on scaling up and evaluating the cost of our technology," Cui said. "There are no roadblocks for either of these."

Cui has filed a patent on the technology and is evaluating the formation of a company or licensing the technology to a battery manufacturer. Potentially two-day batteries could be on the market within "several years," he said.

Silicon anodes are not a new idea. Researchers have known for some 30 years that they have the "highest theoretical charge capacity," but, until now, they haven't been practical because they change volume by 400 percent as lithium is inserted and extracted, the journal said. Cui's solution: a sponge-like network of tiny silicon nanowires, each of which expands but doesn't fracture.

"Nanowires grown directly on the current collector do not pulverize or break into smaller particles after cycling," the journal reports. "Rather, facile strain relaxation in the nanowires allows them to increase in diameter and length without breaking."

The Many Advantages of Nanowires

Not only can the nanowires handle the extreme volume changes, they also "provide good electronic contact and conduction, and display short lithium insertion distances," Cui wrote. "We achieved the theoretical charge capacity for silicon anodes and maintained a discharge capacity close to 75 percent of this maximum, with little fading during cycling."

The nanowires are grown directly on the metallic substrate that collects current, a process that has several advantages, Cui explained. First, the nanowires' small diameter can better accommodate the four-fold expansion in volume without fracturing. In addition, each nanowire is electrically connected to the metallic current collector, so all the nanowires contribute to battery capacity.

The nanowires also offer efficient "charge transport" and eliminate the need for additives to conduct electricity, which add weight, the journal stated. In addition to Cui, the researchers were Candace K. Chan, Hailin Peng, Gao Liu, Kevin McIlwrath, Xiao Feng Zhang and Robert A. Huggins.

Use Wi-Fi on the iPod touch to connect to the Internet using Safari web browser

When you use any of these applications,YouTube, or iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store iPod touch does the following in order until it is connected:

Connects over the last Wi-Fi network you used that's available.

If no Wi-Fi networks you've used are available, iPod touch will scan for Wi-Fi networks and show a list of Wi-Fi networks in range. Tap a network and, if necessary, enter the password to join. Networks that require a password show a lock icon () next to them.

There is an Option to manually enter your Wi-Fi network name/SSID (if the Wi-Fi network is configured not to broadcast or be displayed to the public). If necessary, enter the password to join.

When iPod touch is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar at the top of the screen it will show connection strength. The hack sendS an authentic looking patch from Microsoft to a person's computer, once they have clicked on a link to view a person's profile.

Once install the virus by hitting run, it opens a back door on the compromised machine and proceeds to download more down loaders, Trojans and a remote control tool from multiple servers. The infected files are coming from servers located in Malaysia and the Ukraine. McAfee has notified both MySpace and Microsoft but, at the time of writing, the booby-trapped MySpace profile was still live and serving up the malicious file.

When the article was published 01/13/08, MySpace had not fixed the issue, odds are very likely that they will be doing so in the future if not today as news gets out. The problem with getting this information out,is not everyone who uses MySpace reads security blogs or security news sites. A hardware firewall will include network address translation (NAT) capabilities that make your PC invisible to anyone trying to attack it. If you enable the hardware firewall, you probably don't need a third-party software firewall. The decision is yours, but if you choose not to encrypt, make sure to disable file sharing. Assuming you have your hardware firewall turned on, the worst that probably will happen is that your throughput will drop if your piggybacking friends crank up BitTorrent every evening. If you want to determine whether others are using your unsecured network, most routers have a page that lists all the wireless clients currently connected.

Some people, are not comfortable with the idea of allowing just anyone to use their wireless service. Feeling that that kinda practice can make your network vulnerable to hackers, since anyone who uses your wireless signal is on your home network. Malevolent users, for instance, could release nasty viruses or hijack your PC. If you experience interference—from a neighbor's router, for instance—you can change your channel to solve the problem. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are non-overlapping channels. So if your neighbor's network uses channel 6, change your router to 1 or 11. Wi Fi Problem Solvers

Improving a wireless signal is part trial and error. No two homes are alike, and no two solutions will work for everyone, but here are some common guidelines. First, position your antenna on a high perch clear of obstructions. (The wireless signal radiates down.) Keep in mind that certain things will interfere with the signal: metal, and dense building materials such as brick, stucco, and concrete. So avoid metal pipes and construction.

If changing your Wi-Fi antenna positioning doesn't help, you can get an extender (or "repeater"), such as the Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54G, available for around $90. Devices like this will boost your range from 50 to 75 feet, A somewhat easier approach is Wireless Garden's Super Cantenna. This $39.95 tripod-mounted, high-gain antenna connects to your router and can be pointed at a specific area to amplify the signal.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://free-wifi.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-do-i-extend-range-of-my-wireless.html' title='How do I extend the range of my wireless signal? Wi-Fi Problem Solvers

Certain applications,IP Webcams, home FTP servers, and online games—require that you open ports on your router to allow outside requests to be sent to an internal computer on a home network. This procedure, called port forwarding, is pretty straightforward. First, you'll need to find out which ports you need to open for your particular application or service. Then, you'll open those ports on the router. All models are different, but the process is similar. Open your router's configuration tool, and find a tab labeled Port Forwarding. Enter the service or software name, then type the Start Port and End Port numbers. If you're opening one port, enter the same number in both fields. Select TCP as the protocol, then click OK. Check your router's Web site for instructions for your specific brand.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://free-wifi.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-do-i-open-ports-on-my-router-wi-fi.html' title='How do I open ports on my router? Similarly, WEP demands that you choose from 64-bit or 128-bit encryption, and enter an alphanumeric hex phrase,.

In addition to enabling wireless security, you can also disable the broadcasting of the Service Set Identifier (SSID, or network name). Doing so can make the network more difficult for hackers to see. Also, make sure to enable the router's hardware firewall (more on that later), and change the router's default password. And never enable file sharing, unless you really use it.

I cannot connect to my router. Some newer laptop computers incorporate wireless adapters as a built-in feature of the system. Separate add-on adapters must be purchased for most computers, however.

Popular wireless network adapters for PCs exist in the form of a PCMCIA "credit card".

Macintosh computers use the distinctive AirPort card. USB wireless adapters that do not resemble cards also exist.

No wireless hardware other than adapters is required to build a small wireless LAN (WLAN). However, to increase the performance of a WLAN, accommodate more computers, and increase the network's range, wireless access points and/or wireless routers can be deployed.

Wireless routers function comparably to traditional routers for wired networks. One generally deploys wireless routers when building an all-wireless network from the ground up.

An alternative to routers, access points allow wireless networks to join an existing wired network. One typically deploys access points when growing a network that already has a wired switch or router installed. In home networking, a single access point (or router) possesses sufficient range to span most homes. Businesses in office buildings often must deploy multiple access points and/or routers.

Access points and routers often utilize a wireless antenna that significantly increase the communication range of the wireless radio signal. These antennas are optional and removable on most equipment. It's also possible to mount antennas on wireless clients to increase the range of wireless adapters. This is common practice for wardrivers, but add-on antennas are generally not required in typical home or business networks.

computer problem, pc support, technical support, computer help, online computer repair, microsoft windows help, slow computer, computer troubleshooting, virus and spyware removal

What is wireless networking? Wi Fi How does it work?

A wireless network uses radio signals or microwaves to broadcast data and information. Rather than being transmitted through traditional coaxial, CAT5 ethernet or other standard wired methods, the data is beamed out over the airwaves.

Wireless networks offer advantages for some. Users with personal digital assistant (PDA) handhelds such as Palm Pilots, wifi enabled cell phones, or users with laptops can use wireless technology to allow them the convenience to move about while maintaining their network connectivity. Another pro is the ability for users to network desktop computers at various locations without having to deal with the hassle or expense of running a wired connection to that spot.

Most wired networks operate at 100mbps, and many organizations have upgraded to the newer standard of 1gbps.

A large percentage of wireless networks operate at 11mbps, roughly equivalent to the old wired speed of 10mbps. Most wireless network equipment available today is compatible with both 802.11b and the faster 802.11g which operates at speeds up to 54mbps. There is also a new, emerging wireless network standard, 802.11n, which theoretically increases both the speed and the range of the wireless network.

WHAT CAN AFFECT MY WI FI CONNECTION

Wireless network speeds are affected by obstructions such as walls and floors. Most wireless network equipment, for consumers in particular, also operates in the 2.4Ghz frequency range. This is the same range as other household devices such as cordless phones, baby monitors, etc. The interference from these devices, as well as microwave ovens and other electrical interference can greatly impact the range, speed and quality of your wireless network.

computer problem, pc support, technical support, computer help, online computer repair, microsoft windows help, slow computer, computer troubleshooting, virus and spyware removal

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://free-wifi.blogspot.com/2008/01/what-is-wireless-networking-wi-fi-how.html' title='What is wireless networking? There are plenty of great anti-virus software packages available. This software checks for known viruses by scanning your computer periodically. Most will also check for viruses on incoming email. It is important to update the software as well though. New viruses are discovered almost daily. At least once a week you should check the web site of the vendor that makes your anti-virus software to see if there is an update available.

2.Do not open unknown or suspicious email. Many viruses and worms use what is called “social engineering”. That is, they attempt to trick you into becoming a participant in the process. The latest viruses can “spoof” the sending email address so that it looks like it is coming from someone other than the computer that infected it.

If an email is not from someone you know, it is usually best to simply delete it without looking at it. If the email appears to be from someone you know, you should read the message carefully before opening any attached files. Viruses and worms often have bad English and poor grammar. Consider whether the person you know would really have written that message or forwarded you the attached file.

3.Keep your computer patched against known vulnerabilities. Almost as often as new viruses are discovered, new vulnerabilities are discovered as well. Many times they are in the operating system (like Windows), but vulnerabilities are also found in tools like your web browser, email software and other 3rd party tools. Left unpatched, these vulnerabilities can be exploited by hackers to obtain access and control of your computer.

Staying up to date can be difficult. Some vendors, such as Microsoft, have automated utilities that check for updates and notify you. Specifically, it floods a target system via spoofed broadcast ping messages.

In such an attack, a perpetrator sends a large amount of ICMP echo (ping) traffic to IP broadcast addresses, all of it having a spoofed source address of the intended victim. If the routing device delivering traffic to those broadcast addresses delivers the IP broadcast to all hosts (for example via a layer 2 broadcast), most hosts on that IP network will take the ICMP echo request and reply to it with an echo reply, multiplying the traffic by the number of hosts responding. On a multi-access broadcast network, hundreds of machines might reply to each packet.

Today, thanks largely to the ease with which administrators can make a network immune to this abuse, very few networks remain vulnerable to smurf attacks.

The fix is twofold:

Configure individual hosts and routers not to respond to ping requests to broadcast addresses, and Configure routers not to forward packets directed to broadcast addresses.

Another proposed solution, to fix this as well as other problems, is network ingress filtering which rejects the attacking packets on the basis of the forged source address.

Wi-Fi Speed Whay Is my Wi Fi Connection Slow Slow

The raw speed reported by your wireless network adapter is not necessarily a reliable indicator of actual raw speed. The reason is that transmit speed fluctuates according to the wireless error rate, and when the wireless link is idle, unrealistic speed may be reported (since no errors are occuring when the wireless link is idle).

Data can only flow on one wireless link in one direction at any one time, which means that the maximum data transfer rate will be well below half of the raw wireless network speed.

Increase transmit power
Won't help on receiving, so higher power may well be needed at both ends.
Takes a lot more power to make a substantial difference in range.
May increase interference to other users of the frequency band.
Improving antenna (helping sending &

However, because of the need to manage Wi-Fi operation (SSID selection, WEP/WPA security, etc.), a Wi-Fi client bridge will typically have configuration screen(s) at a specified private IP address (e.g., 192.168.0.254) that can be accessed with a standard Web browser (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer) from a local computer. Unfortunately, unlike with a Wi-Fi router, a computer connected to a Wi-Fi client bridge can't normally communicate with both the client bridge configuration and the Internet at the same time.

How To Configure a Wi-Fi client bridge.

Problem: The NIC on a local computer needs a manually-assigned IP on the same subnet to connect to the client bridge config interface but then can't access the Internet, and when configured for DHCP through the client bridge can then talk to the Internet but not the client bridge.

Solutions:

Multihoming of the NIC (single link, multiple IP addresses)
For Microsoft Windows XP, see "Configuring Multiple IP Addresses on a Network Adapter" in Configuring IP Addressing and Name Resolution. Note: This only works with all manual addresses, not DHCP, which can be problematic when roaming unless managed with configuration manager software.

Two NICs in one computer, both connected to the client bridge:
one manually configured to talk to the client bridge config
the other with DHCP for the Internet.

Different computers for
client bridge config (manually configured)
Internet access (DHCP).

Connection manager software for rapid changing of NIC configuration profiles try theese.

Boingo Wi-Fi software (free)
Mobile Net Switch
NetSwitcher

PROBLEMS WHEN I ADDED WIRELESS ACESS TO A WIRED NETWORK

<img style="float:left; The 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter is now introduced as a wireless upgrade on select wireless-upgradeable ThinkPad® models.

Whether working from the office or on the road, this option enables connectivity to existing 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g networks4. It improves mobility and provides the performance necessary for high-bandwidth applications such as:

Multimedia delivery
IP telephony
Large file transfers
In addition to offering high performance, this Wi-Fi adapter card ships complete with an easy-to-use connection configuration utility. You can specify encryption and enhanced roaming settings, plus infrastructure, ad hoc, and transmit modes.

Compatibility with the 802.11b and 802.11g protocols allows you to leverage the large install base of 802.11b technology. You may also benefit from higher data rates up to 54 Mbps when connecting to an 802.11g or 802.11a-based access point.

Key prerequisites
Refer to the Hardware requirements section.

Product number

31P9701

Actual device range and data transfer speed depend upon many factors and are often less than the maximum possible.

3 With 11g-based Access Point.

4 Public network access limited; subscription may be required. Access fees may apply.
Additional information
The tri-mode capability of this adapter enables you to easily transmit on 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g WLAN networks. The key attributes of the 802.11a protocol include:

Transmission speeds of up to 54 Mbps
Greater system capacity supports more users with eight non-overlapping channels
Operates in the less-crowded 5 GHz frequency band

Flexibility
The new 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter is an ideal choice if you are on the move in the office, or in a campus environment. The adapter will automatically search for the best connection as you roam through different WLAN networks, helping to maintain connectivity throughout your wireless network. The adapter can be used at work, home, or public hot-spots without hardware configuration changes.

The adapter helps improve costs of ownership by supporting all three WLAN protocols. Costs are lowered by reducing the need to support multiple environments or reconfigure client devices as users move between them. In addition, existing WLAN investments are protected as the adapter supports low- and high-speed WLAN network devices. 4 OUT OF 5 STARS

I need to set up a Wireless Lan with a range of approx 500 meters.

Q:Can anyone help please?. Moving the router or using directional antennas might help, too

A:Buy the most huge stupidly ridiculous antenna you can find and place it in the sky. this will gt 1000% connected

go on ebay and buy a yagi 19dbi antenna or go to maplins and buy a hawkings 15dbi antenna.

A:Some good suggestions have been posted. If the outage occurs every 4 minutes it seems too regular to be something random like a cordless phone. What you really need to do is do a site survey. Unfortunately, most site survey is done with a 802.11 client so other signals like cordless phones, microwaves, and other transmitting devices don't get picked up. Nevertheless, at least see if there is another powerful wifi signal nearby. Then you can play with you channel selection to move to a different channel.

You can also try a directional antenna. My recommendation would be a panel or a grid, they're ugly but they have high gain. The high gain will give you a narrower beam which could also help isolate interference.

Sometimes the noise figure in the environment may just be too high. Moving to a higher frequency, say 5Ghz could move you out of the interfering band.

Avnet, and Wi2Wi have announced that they have entered into a distribution agreement

Avnet Memec, a part of Avnet, and Wi2Wi have announced that they have entered into a distribution agreement covering the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Under the terms of this agreement, Avnet Memec will distribute Wi2Wi s complete line of GPS modules, and WiFi plus WiFi/BT System-in-package products across North America.

Wi2Wi creates wireless module and System-in-package products that dramatically reduce time-to-market for wireless systems designers, and simplify the integration of multiple radios into one product. Currently available applications run the gamut, including some entertaining games, various dictionaries and eBooks, streaming radio tools, a voice recorder, instant messaging/IRC clients, a quasi-GPS program and more.

Enabling the applications (jailbreaking and more)

The first step for putting third-party applications on your iPhone is to determine what firmware/software version you are running. To do this, go to the main screen and tap Settings, then General then About. Look next to Version. You will see either 1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.1.1 or 1.1.2.

Once you’ve determined your firmware version, use one of the following procedures, which all have the same end result: “jailbreaking” the device (allowing files to be written to the filesystem) and installing Installer.app. Installer.app (which shows up as simply “Installer” on the iPhone) is an iPhone application itself that catalogs and installs other iPhone binaries.

1.1.2 Jailbreaking iPhone firmware/software 1.1.2 requires the most effort out of any system iteration. If your iPhone didn’t come with 1.1.2 out-of-the box and you haven’t yet upgraded, we recommend sticking with version 1.1.1 if you’d like to use third-party applications. However, if you’ve already updated to 1.1.2, there’s not an easy way to go back to version 1.1.1 and keep your phone active for voice services.

There are two methods for jailbreaking 1.1.2 phones. The first (described here) is a uniform, platform-agnostic process that doesn’t require the use of any third-party utilities other than what is included in a single download package from Conceited Software. Try it first.

If that method fails, there is another process that is even more tedious and requires the use of the third-party utility iNdependence. Try it if the first one fails.

These procedures, if performed correctly, will jailbreak the iPhone, install Installer.app, put SSH capablities on the device, and enable a hidden feature (built into the iPhone) that allows you to swipe across the main launching screen (SpringBoard) to access more application icons.

After it’s done, you should launch Installer.app (from your iPhone’s main screen) and tap Install at the bottom of the screen, then tap the Sources section and install Community Sources. This will provide a much larger array of accessible applications. You’ll also want to install BSD Subsystem under “System” right away. See the section “Getting to know Installer.app” below for further instruction.

1.1.1 If you’re using firmware version 1.1.1, you’re in luck. Jailbreaking this iteration is a one-step process. On your iPhone, launch Safari, then navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com. This will automatically jailbreak and put Installer.app on the device.

This process will jailbreak the iPhone, install Installer.app and enable a hidden feature (built into the iPhone) that allows you to swipe across the main launching screen (SpringBoard) to access more application icons.

After it’s done, you should launch Installer.app (from your iPhone’s main screen) and tap Install at the bottom of the screen, then tap the Sources section and install Community Sources. This will provide a much larger array of accessible applications. You’ll also want to install BSD Subsystem and Open SSH under “System” right away. See the section “Using Installer.app” below for further instruction.

1.0, 1.0.1 or 1.0.2 If you are using iPhone Software/Firmware 1.0.2 or earlier you can directly install Installer.app, which is now accompanied by a GUI-based Mac OS X application and a similar Windows application — available from this page — that will literally do everything for you. Just download an launch the application, select your iPhone firmware version, and let it do its thing. In short order, you will have the Installer icon on your iPhone’s home screen.

Once you have Installer.app on your 1.0, 1.0.1 or 1.0.2 iPhone, there are a few things you’ll want to do immediately:

Tap Update and check if there is a new release of Installer.app available. If one is listed, tap it, then tap the Update button to make sure you are running the latest version.

Tap Install, then tap Community Sources and install it. This will dramatically increase the number of applications available for download and installation through Installer.app
Install SummerBoad if using 1.0.2 [Note that SummerBoard is not compatible with iPhone Software/Firmware 1.1.1 or later, and not necessary, as there is a different app launching mechanism on the iPhone], listed under System — it’s important that you do this as before installing other applications. SummerBoard will replace “SpringBoard,” which is what you see when you push the home button, and allow you to scroll through an unlimited number of apps — a major point since the iPhone’s home screen is limited to sixteen icons, meaning that you won’t, by default, be able to access more than four third-party applications. As such, SummerBoard should be the first third-party application aside from Installer.app and Community Sources you install, as it will appear on your home screen and allow access to other apps.

You’ll also want to install BSD Subsystem and Open SSH under “System” right away. See the section “Using Installer.app” below for further instruction.

Using Installer.app

Installer.app is the result, primarily, of efforts from Maksim Rogov at Nullriver Software. It offers a slick interface for downloading iPhone applications over and EDGE or WiFi connection directly to the device itself. Here’s what you need to know about using Installer:

Installing applications A very straightforward process. Tap the Installer icon to launch the program, then tap the “Install” button on the bottom of the interface. Applications are organized by category, and accessed through a familiar sliding-style interface. Once you’ve found the package you want, tap its name then tap the “Install” button in the upper-right corner. As soon as you quit Installer.app, the new application should appear on your SpringBoard. You might, however, need to restart your iPhone for full functionality in some cases.

Uninstalling applications Just tap “Uninstall” in Installer.app and you can remove any applications stored on your iPhone, except those any that you manually transferred to the device via an SSH session.

Adding sources Application repositories can be easily added to Installer.app. These sources allow applications outside the default set of community sources offered by Installer.app to be pushed through the application (see this article for an example; ScummVM, a game framework for the iPhone, also requires the addition of a new source).

To add a source, tap “Sources,” button, then tap “Edit” in the upper-right corner, and finally “Add” in the upper-left corner. Enter the URL of the source you would like to add and press “OK.” Installer.app will add the source, and you will be able to find the new application(s) in the normal “Install” menu.

Manually installing applications on the iPhone If a community source isn’t available for the application you’d like to install, there is a manual process for pushing applications. This process uses the Mac OS X Terminal, but the steps can be replicated for any SSH/SCP utility.

Download a binary for the iPhone
Open a command-line interface (such as the Terminal in Mac OS X) and type scp -r then a space.

Drag the application you downloaded to the Terminal window.
Type another space, then root@IPAddress:/Applications/ (replacing IPAddress with your iPhone’s IP Address). When you’re done, your Terminal command should look something like this: scp -r /Users/bwilson/Desktop/Lights\ Off.app/ root@10.10.10.10:/Applications/ (that’s a fake IP address, by the way)
Restart your iPhone: Hold down the sleep/wake button until you see the slider, then slide it off. Power it back on by briefly holding the sleep/wake button
What to do if your iPhone becomes unstable or you want to delete all hacks

If your iPhone starts becoming unstable or exhibiting strange behavior as a result of third-party application installation, you can easily bring it back to normal operating mode by performing a restore. Click the Restore button under the Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed-up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc. If things go terribly wrong and your iPhone refuses to restore, see our piece titled “How ‘Recovery Mode’ can rescue your iPhone.”

Now that your iPhone is primed to receive and make use of third-party binaries, let’s take a look at what is available. Unfortunately, many of the current binaries still fall into the purely demonstrative category or are of little use. A select few, however, enhance the functionality of the iPhone in meaningful ways. Make sure you’ve installed Community Sources as mentioned above, then check out these apps:

Apollo IM/Mobile Chat: native instant messaging clients Apollo IM support AOL instant messaging (AIM) as well as ICQ and MSN, Mobile Chat currently supports only AIM. Both still contain a few bugs, but are much more usable than any Web-based alternative.

Navizon: Triangulating GPS application Though it’s somewhat inaccurate, Navizon works to fulfill one of the most contentious functionality gaps left by Apple, showing — in the iPhone’s Google Maps application — an approximation of exactly where your iPhone is located on the globe. (more details)

SendSong Under “Multimedia” in Installer.app, this application will let you pick any song stored on your iPhone and play it, send it via email, or, most usefully, add as a ringtone. Uses a simple scrolling interface to access songs.

MobileFinder Under “Utilities” in Installer.app, this is a Mac OS X Finder for your iPhone! Sort of. This application will let you browse files on your iPhone, and launch applications by double-tapping them. It also lets you copy, paste and delete items, as well as create new files and folders. This program shows a lot of promise, and while it has a few kinks, we imagine it’s utility will prove invaluable as things develop.

Squid Under “Productivity” in Installer.app, this is a file browser for your iPhone. Similar to MobileFinder, except it allows you to quickly modify the permissions of files you locate — useful if an application won’t execute, or you want to restrict access to certain items. Be careful, however; modifying permissions of system files can have pernicious results.

VNotes Under “Multimedia” in Installer.app, this is a basic voice recorder for the iPhone. Record through the mic, playback through the speaker. Once you’ve made your iPhone ready accept third-party applications, the process for setting up Simplify Media is, well, simple:

Download Simplify Media for Mac OS X or Windows.
Launch the application on your Mac or PC and select the option to setup a new user account. Enter a username and password.

Simplify Media should automatically select your iTunes music folder. If not, select it from the “Computer” selection under “Settings.” The software will scan the folder and build its own music database. Keep the application running On your iPhone, launch Installer.app, then install the Simplify Media application under “Multimedia”
Return to your home screen and launch Simplify Media, then enter the account information you created on your Mac or PC.

Sign in, and you’ll have access to the music library or libraries on computers connected to your account (the Simplify Media application must be running on target computers). The interface is typical, iPhone sliding-style, and any track you play will launch the QuickTime player on the iPhone.

Jet Blue Wi-Fi Not Done Yet FREE WIFI HERE

Jet Blue Wi-Fi Not Fully Cooked2008 and Yahoo Mobile in flight is the best we can do?

At this point we've been talking about potential in-flight broadband services for so long -- we'd prefer the industry to wake us when it arrives instead of teasing us with press nuggets. Allowed to take part in the maiden voyage of the airline's only Wi-Fi equipped plane today, CNET's Caroline McCarthy says Jet Blue's in-flight broadband service isn't worth writing home about just yet. Not only does the trial service restrict you to just IM and e-mail traffic, the e-mail doesn't even allow users to upload attachments:

The e-mail application is very light. You have access to your address book, but you can't send attachments, which is why you aren't seeing any awesome photos of me hanging out with the flight crew. It all reminded me of an ultra-low-end mobile browser, which leads me to the hack I found. Indeed, as I learned, it's Yahoo Mobile.
That means you can still get around the restriction on browsing mobile content, but it's still far from the in-flight broadband revolution you've been waiting for. Jet Blue is starting small, and from the sounds of it -- that's a good idea. PC World does a good job of breaking down the in-flight broadband services coming from Jet Blue and three other airlines. All four really aren't getting off the ground until 2008 or later, so wake us when we get to our destination.

New Skype Phone Firmware Free WiFi

New Skype Phone Firmware
We've updated our firmware for the SMC Skype WiFi phone. You can download the latest version here.

iFON for the iPhone and iPod touch Free WiFi

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SD06kDHcZ6w/R18bfVwWi2I/AAAAAAAAEPs/jObpF6aDhHY/s320/img_0059.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142859524710239074" />
iFON for the iPhone and iPod touch
If you're proud owner of an iPhone the FONLabs have an applet for you! Please note that these packages are mainted by third parties.

A list of some of the packages in the Community Sources can be seen at conceited software and Ste Packaging.

How to make a package - Draft documentation
Please bear with us, we are working on a new site and full documentation.
The format of a sample repository with a few packages.
can be downloaded here
A package consists of a zip file (that retains executable permissions) and a plist file that describes the package and defines the preflight/postflight/install/update/uninstall scripts.

The top portion defines the package description, which is as follows:
plist structure
bundleIdentifier (string, required) - The unique bundle identifier of this package, this is how Installer knows what you are talking about. Do not ever change this value once a package goes live, unless you want to fork your package.
name (string, required) - The name of the package as it will appear in the Installer package listings.

version (string, required) - The version of your package. Currently, Installer.app does not parse version numbers, but rather compares them -- meaning that you can only have one version of a product at a time live on the repositories. This shortcoming will be addressed in the near future.
location (string, required) - The location for the associated package zip file. This zip file MUST retain executable permissions if you are going to be installing any executables.

size (string, required) - The exact byte size of the package zip file. This must match or the Installer will not be able to install the package.
url (string, optional) - A url to link the "More info..." button to.
description (string, optional) - A package description or README. At this time Installer can only view a small portion of this text, but this will be addressed soon.

maintainer (string, optional) - The third party maintainer name for this package. You do not need to set this if it is the same as the repository maintainer.

contact (string, optional) - The third party maintainer contact (e-mail) for this package. You do not need to set this if it is the same as the repository maintainer's contact.
restartInstaller (boolean, optional) - set to true if you want installer to prompt the user to restart Installer itself after installing or updating this package.
scripts (array, required) - This is where the core installation procedure takes place. It is composed of one or more Installer scripts:
preflight (array, optional) - this script is executed before any installs or updates, but NOT uninstalls. It is typically used to check whether the package can be installed.

install (array, required) - this is the install script, without this, the user won't be able to install the package. Makes sense, doesn't it?
update (array, optional) - this script is executed when the user updates the package, if it is not defined, installer uses the install script (see above) to update instead, effectively overwriting the old package -- this is useful for smaller packages that don't really need a separate update script.
postflight (array, optional) - this script is executed after any install or update of the package, but NOT uninstalls.

uninstall (array, optional) - this script is executed when the user chooses to uninstall the package. Although it is optional, it is HIGHLY recommended that you do define it so that your package can be uninstalled. If it is not defined, the uninstall button will not show up in Installer.
Each of these scripts is an array, containing script commands in the following format:

<array>
<string>CommandName</string>
<string>Argument 1</string>
<string>Argument 2</string>
</array>
A command may take any number of arguments, as well as some commands take array arguments that can even contain other scripts embedded in the same format. The commandn name however, is always a string. Please note that in the event that the Installer cannot identify a command name, the script execution will be aborted (notifying the user).

script commands
CopyPath(source, destination) - Copies a path recursively. You can specify a folder or a file, but in either case the destination path must be absolute, do not leave out the filename when copying to a folder! It may work, but it is bad practice to do so and may cause unexpected results in some circumstances. At first, the company offered software that let members, called Foneros, turn Wi-Fi routers into shared access points, but it took hours to get up and running.

La Fonera splits a Wi-Fi connection in two: an encrypted channel for the Fonero and a public one for neighbors or passers-by. Foneros can decide how much of their bandwidth to share with the public and can log on to any Fon router without charge. “Aliens,” as Fon calls nonmembers, can register on a Web page and pay a modest $2 or $3 for 24 hours of access.

Joanna Rees, chief executive of Fon USA, said such rates at coffee shops, airports and hotels might work for a business person with an expense account but are too high for people who just want to quickly check e-mail, make a call on a Wi-Fi phone or play on a wireless video game device.

Starbucks Corp. and T-Mobile USA Inc. representatives responded that they provide a premium service, and that customers see value in paying for speed, security and reliability.

But until now, ISPs in the U.S. have resisted the Fon model. Most big companies’ end-user license agreements prohibit subscribers from sharing their connection outside the home or business. Verizon Communications Inc., for example, can terminate contracts if it finds an ad-hoc hotspot.

“It’s a dirty secret how much leeching” goes on, Rees said. She said ISPs should embrace Fon because the routers, which require that “aliens” enter a valid credit card number before getting online, put a sharp stop to the leeching. And getting free access to the worldwide network of La Fonera routers encourages people to get or keep a broadband connection at home.

Time Warner may be looking ahead to the not-so-distant future when some of the 300 or so municipal wireless projects — featuring free or at least inexpensive broadband — being considered today become reality.
